What Do You Want To Do When You Grow Up?

Grow up

Do you remember as a child ‘playing’ what you would be when you grow-up?

I was going to be a nurse or an infant school teacher. In my teens I realised that I was not good with blood (especially other peoples) so nursing was not an option. And after several weeks of work experience placement as a teacher I realised that my love for a class room full of other peoples children under the age of seven had left me.

I eventually found my career in Human Resources (HR) working for medium to large corporate firms. I loved my job. I found it rewarding and varied. I was good at it. I went back to uni and completed my degree part-time while I worked full time in HR. I exceeded my own expectations in this field, all was good.

Then one day, as I stopped and looked at my life, I found myself getting itchy feet. I was ready for a new challenge. I could feel myself being pulled in a new direction. I had completed my qualification as a yoga practitioner – it opened my mind to other things. My approach to life, stress and career was shifting. I found I was again asking myself the question “what do I want to do when I grow up?”

I am not going to lie. This was unsettling and scary.

I had guided others through a career change through my role as a HR Manager. But I never thought I would need to do this for myself.

I sat with this for sometime. I gave myself some space to just let it be. I knew that I wanted to do something in the health and wellness area, but the specifics had not yet presented themselves.

When the opportunity came to move from Australia to live in England, UK, I jumped at the opportunity. I had always wanted to live and work overseas. We moved to a little village in the UK country side. This was my opportunity to take my career in a new direction.

I reframed the question “what do I want to do when I grow up” to “What do I love to do?”  I had to delve deep here and be really honest with myself. Next, “what careers can I do that will match what I love?”. And finally, “what do I need to do to make that career happen?”  I now had a clear vision – I wanted to be a life coach, with a focus on health and wellness. I want to work with successful women to help them achieve their life of abundant health, wellness and happiness.  To make my new career come true I had to go back and study, get qualified and start my own business. No easy feat. But one that I have loved each and every step of the way.

I now work with clients that are ready to make their own career and life changes. And having been there and done that myself, here are my suggestions should you find yourself in this place:

  • Don’t quite your job just yet. You need to have a plan and achievable actions to get you to your next career.
  • Take out a piece of paper and ask your self these questions:
    • What do I love to do?
    • What career options support what I love to do?
    • What do I need to do to make this happen?
    • What is the one step that I will do today to get this started?
  • Be realistic, this will take some time, especially if you need to study or get a new qualification.
  • Research those in your new field, how have the best of the best made a success in this is field.
  • Find out what is involved if study is required.
  • Create a plan of action with realistic timeframes.
  • Need some assistance? Get yourself a life coach. There is no need to take this journey on your own.
