Lose weight: Eat Breakfast

Lose weight Eat breakfast

What are you having for breakfast today – coffee?

Do you barely glance at the kitchen in the morning, opting instead to run out the door without eating any breakfast?

There is ample evidence to show that the simple act of eating breakfast is a big part of losing weight, and keeping it off.

Research coming out of the United States of America shows that people that skip breakfast tend to replace calories during the day with mindless nibbling and over eating at lunch and dinner, thereby setting themselves up for poor health and weight gain. The research further found that women who ate breakfast regularly tended to eat fewer calories overall during the day.

Eating early in the day makes sense, it keeps you from starvation eating later in the day. But more importantly eating breakfast jump-starts your metabolism. When you don’t eat breakfast, you are fasting for 15-20 hours, so your body is not producing the enzymes needed to metabolise fat in order to lose weight.

The smart breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so it’s essential to make wise food choices for breakfast. That’s where fruit, veggies and gluten-free grains come into the picture. These foods are high in fibre so they fill you up and stop you from eating low value, fatty foods by mid morning.

Breakfast does not need to be time consuming or elaborate to make. Keep it simple and use nutrient rich foods and you are good to go.

I am a breakfast cereal girl most days, and I like to make my own gluten-free granola. A batch will last me about one week. Top it off with some almond milk and fresh fruit and I am fuelled with energy to get my day underway.

Another great option is a Breakfast smooth. Smoothies are a quick, easy and nutritious way to start your day. Keep your freezer stock up on fresh berries and bananas (peeled when ripe and frozen) will ensure you always have fruit at hand to make a smoothie.

In winter I like to have a warming quinoa porridge and in summer I like to have a chia seed breakfast pudding.
