Fundies Wholefood Market and Café is located in the leafly suburb of Paddington, Brisbane, and it is one of my favourite weekend haunts. With my calico shopping bag tucked under my arm, ready to be filled with my weekly shop of wholefood groceries, I walk in the warm Brisbane sunshine up to this café for a leisurely morning of good food and a spot of shopping.

How to: shop organic on a budget

Shop organic on a budget

Choosing to buy organic produce where possible is something that is important to me for several reasons, including:

  1. Reduced exposure to pesticide in food, especially fruit and vegetables. Conventional growers use synthetic pesticides to protect their crops from molds, inspects and diseases. When farmers spray pesticides, this can leave residue on the produce.
  2. Reduced exposure to eating genetically modified food.
  3. Reduced consumption of food additives. Organic regulations ban or severely restrict the use of food additives, processing aids, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colorings and flavourings and monosodium glutamate.
  4. Some studies have indicated the organic food has higher levels of vitamins and minerals.
  5. Protect and support the environment. Organic farming practices are designed to benefit the environment by reducing pollution, conserving water and soil quality.

Understanding why I prefer to buy organic is one thing, but making my food budget work with that choice is a bit of an art – and one that I have perfected over time.

Lose weight: Eat Breakfast

Lose weight Eat breakfast

What are you having for breakfast today – coffee?

Do you barely glance at the kitchen in the morning, opting instead to run out the door without eating any breakfast?

There is ample evidence to show that the simple act of eating breakfast is a big part of losing weight, and keeping it off.

Research coming out of the United States of America shows that people that skip breakfast tend to replace calories during the day with mindless nibbling and over eating at lunch and dinner, thereby setting themselves up for poor health and weight gain. The research further found that women who ate breakfast regularly tended to eat fewer calories overall during the day.

What Do You Want To Do When You Grow Up?

Grow up

Do you remember as a child ‘playing’ what you would be when you grow-up?

I was going to be a nurse or an infant school teacher. In my teens I realised that I was not good with blood (especially other peoples) so nursing was not an option. And after several weeks of work experience placement as a teacher I realised that my love for a class room full of other peoples children under the age of seven had left me.

I eventually found my career in Human Resources (HR) working for medium to large corporate firms. I loved my job. I found it rewarding and varied. I was good at it. I went back to uni and completed my degree part-time while I worked full time in HR. I exceeded my own expectations in this field, all was good.

Then one day, as I stopped and looked at my life, I found myself getting itchy feet. I was ready for a new challenge. I could feel myself being pulled in a new direction. I had completed my qualification as a yoga practitioner – it opened my mind to other things. My approach to life, stress and career was shifting. I found I was again asking myself the question “what do I want to do when I grow up?”
